Yesterday, industry whispers indicated that Star Wars 1313 had been nudged onto the backburner by Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm. Apparently this isn’t the case after all, according to a representative from LucasArts .
Update
When reached for comment on the matter, a LucasArts representative told Kotaku (via D’toid) that “Star Wars 1313 continues production.” So that’s good news, then. Original story follows below.
Original Story
Kotaku claims more than one source for word that the project was put on hold after Disney acquired Lucasfilm in November. The game is now expected to skip E3 2013, and miss its projected 2013 launch.
Another source told the site that 1313 was first conceived under the title Underworld in 2009, as a tie-in to a live-action TV show, set between the prequel and original trilogies.
The original plan was for an open world RPG in the spirit of BioWare’s Knights of the Old Republic, but enhanced by episodic DLC updates.
In 2010, the TV show was shelved and the game was rewritten as a standalone title, and the source said LucusArts went through a transition, planning a number of Star Wars-licensed clones of popular titles like Call of Duty and even Farmville. During this upheaval Underworld became Hive, and turned into a third-person action adventure ala Uncharted.
Sometime in 2011 and 2012, the source said George Lucas saw the game and suggested a number of Star Wars backstories be woven into it, further derailing the project’s tentative story plans. When 1313 debuted at E3 2013, it still didn’t have a story or characters, the source added.
LucasArts hasn’t commented on Kotaku’s story, and is sticking by its previous messaging that the project has not been cancelled.
