President or Prime Minister, principal or parent, highly viewed internet celebrities or disfigured Smosh Pit writer grasping for her hour of sunlight between making galleries about the nerdiest shoe laces/potted plants/anal thermometers, leaders are there to (ideally) steer you right and keep you safe. In science fiction and fantasy there are thousands of leaders who keep their team going and hope alive. And where these leaders go, I will follow...if I ever get out of this pit. Is anybody out there? The only words I ever hear are something about firetrucks and shutting up. They’re not human I tell you!
Captain Malcolm Reynolds, Firefly
A ever growing legion of brown coats can’t be wrong, when you aim to misbehave, you want Captain Mal in front equipped with a pistol and a quip with his mouth hole. Someone who knows the value of doing bad and a nagging heart that will steer you true, there’s no man in the ‘verse I’d rather follow. Except maybe Han Solo.
Minerva McGonagall, Harry Potter Universe
Perhaps you expected Dumbledore to be on this list? Sure, he was the head and heart of Hogwarts and Harry’s mentor but he sure liked to put kids in harms way with little to no explanation. McGonagall was there for her house, there for Hogwarts when it counted and there to put the whoop ass on anyone who bullied her students. Plus she’s played by Dame Maggie Smith who has been 60 years old for 80 years. She knows where all the bodies are buried because she put them there.
Renly Baratheon, Game Of Thrones
Stannis may have the best claim and Robb has a good cause and a pups luck, but I sincerely believe Renly would have made the best ruler for Westeros. He knew the political game from the inside, had a taste for it, was progressive in his policies, had great public relations with the people, was witty, used war as a last resort, and was a damn snappy dresser. Thanks a lot George Robert Rodriguez Martin, this is why we can’t have nice things.
President Laura Roslin and Colonel William Adama, Battlestar Galactica (Reboot)
What Adama lacks, President Roslin has and it’s their partnership that helps keep the number of survivors from slipping away into extinction. They feel all the more real and compelling because of their faults as much as their triumphs. Which could be said for the whole series if the faults hadn’t torn my heart out and danced on it with adorable Japanese robot montages and angel bullshit.
Captain Jack Sparrow, Pirates Of The Caribbean Series
I’m not saying you’re going to get where you’re going fast, safely or even alive. I am saying you will be drunk when you get there. And I for one would follow Jack Sparrow to happy hour and back for a good adventure, savvy?
President Thomas J. Whitmore, Independence Day
Because this…
The aliens probably shouldn’t have let Bill Pullman monologue.
Professor Charles Xavier, X-Men Universe
Professor X’s abilities are so powerful he could crush the spines or warp the minds of anyone who comes into his path. He doesn’t, because he’s a man of peace, which takes more bravery. He also does a mean wheely.
Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Star Trek The Next Generation
OK, fine. I just want Patrick Stewart to tell me what to do. He’d be all, "make it so!" and I’d be all "let me look at my reflection in your head while we thespian scissor".
Ozma, Return to Oz/The Oz Books
Ozma, the true and ageless ruler of Oz, is so much cooler than James Franco. Firstly, she actually has powers. She also spent time as both genders so she knows how both sides live. And I bet you if she free styled in Spring Breakers she would have brought the house down - that’s how Ozma roles witches.
Kermit T. Frog, The Muppets
You need to get the band back together? A show that must go on? Have a caper that needs caping? Kermit is the frog for the job. He brings out the best in the muppets and people around him, a humble frog who leads by letting others shine. He’s an optimist and a dreamer and those make the best leaders, yay or nay?
