A lot of times, Youtube can seem like the crowd at a baseball game. Something stupid, usually the wave, starts happening to everyone around you, and if you don't join in, you seem, I don't know, uncongenial. Well, take a look at the latest wave-like fad sweeping Youtube, the condom challenge:
She's probably taking the condom challenge on a break from working on the
thesis for her Masters of Engineering program at MIT.
Yes, Youtubers are now unrolling condoms and snorting them up their noses before pulling them out of their mouths, all in front of their webcam. It's not only gross, but it's also totally one of those stories local news broadcasts are going to start running in a few weeks, claiming they're dangerous when they really just need an angle to talk about an internet thing. "Coming up at 11! Is your teen taking the condom challenge? Some experts say it could... be dangerous."
"I don't know, it SEEMS like it would be dangerous, right?"

What does one GET for completing the condom challenge? This isn't like Xbox Achievement points. The condom challenge doesn't matter. Is there even anyone to be proud of you? Is it on your bucket lists? It very well could be. People are putting some STUPID stuff on their bucket lists.
"Hey pal, next we should go check off 'feed a baby a bunch of pizza'
and 'rob a paper mill'."

The internet never fails to surprise me. The condom challenge actually reminds me a lot of the period of time right before Nintendo announced the Wii U. Remember, NOBODY predicted the weird motion control wands that launched with the original Wii console.
So about midway through the Wii's lifecycle, the question became, what would Nintendo's next console, the then-theoretical Wii 2, be like? Everyone who assumed it would be a Wii with better graphics was CLEARY wrong. The Wii was a surprise, one we could have never guessed if we sat around and theorized for days on end. It WAS a new way to play video games, one we could have never guessed. And now here's the condom challenge, the latest internet fad that no one, not the most brilliant sociologist, could have ever predicted. And much like the announcement of the tablet-based Wii U, it was a surprise absolutely NO ONE could have expected.
And both will ultimately go on to serve absolutely no role in our lives whatsoever.

Even though there is NO WAY anyone could ever predict it, what do you think will be the next big Youtube craze? Let me know on twitter @mikeyfromsu or in the comments below!
