Indiegogo success rate well below Kickstarter – report

Statistics suggest Indiegogo isn’t as effective as Kickstarter in bringing crowdfunded projects to life.

The Verge harvested publicly accessible statistics from both Indiegogo and Kickstarter to conclude that only only 9.3% of the 142,301 projects launched on Indiegog have reached 100% of funding goal or higher – well below Kickstarter’s 44% success rate.

About 80% of Indiegogo campaigns raise just 25% of their goal, whereas 46% of Kickstarters burn out at 20%, the report added.

Speaking to Polygon, an Indiegogo representative responded to the report by saying it fails to allow for the crowdfunding platform’s flexible funding model, which allows creators to take partial funding even if they don’t hit their overall goal. With this in mind, Indiegogo campaigns don’t precisely “fail” the way Kickstarters do.

Addressing The Verge directly, the site said the figures were skewed by test campaigns which shouldn’t be included in analysis.

Game-specific statistics were not reported. Gaming has become one of the the most lucrative Kickstarter categories.

While it’s not as well known as Kickstarter, Indiegogo has helped fund some signifiant project, not least among them Skullgirls, which expanded its plans from a single DLC character to a whole bunch of new content as a result of crowdfunding.
