GameStop has claimed that Call of Duty: Ghosts is on track to be the most pre-ordered title of 2013, despite claims from Activision that orders of the shooter below those set by Call of Duty: Black Ops 2.
In a press release on the matter, GameStop’s senior VP of merchandising Bob Puzon said, “Call of Duty is an entertainment juggernaut and cultural phenomenon. We are excited for the upcoming release of the new instalment of this blockbuster franchise. We look forward to celebrating the worldwide November launch of this great game that is on track to be the most pre-ordered title of the year.”
It’s contradictory to comments made by Activision Publishing boss Eric Hirshberg during the company’s investor call last month. He said, “As one might expect in this console transition year, pre-orders for Call of Duty: Ghosts are well below the record-setting pace set by Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 last year. However, our quantitative consumer research indicates that hesitation amongst past club pre-orders is primarily due to not knowing which platform they will be playing on, which is natural at this time in the console transition.”
So it’s unclear as to how GameStop is recording its metrics, although as Videogamer has suggested, the figure could come from orders made in 2013, rather than games coming out in 2013. I suspect every man, woman, child and their dog pre-ordered Rockstar’s latest as soon as it was announced, so this could be the case.
What do you think?
Call of Duty: Ghosts will hit PC, PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii U on November 5. It’ll also come to PS4 and Xbox One in due course.
