Blockbuster shutting 300 stores in the US, franchises and licensed stores will stay open

Blockbuster is shutting down in the United States, it has been announced, just days after the company entered into administration in the UK, canceling many Xbox One and PS4 pre-orders in the process.

Purchased by Dish Network in 2010 after declaring bankruptcy, the chain will now cease all domestic operations, which included the shuttering of approximately 300 stores and all distribution centers.

Stores will be closed by January, and the firm’s Blockbuster By Mail program, which was similar to Netflix, will end in mid-December. The streaming service, Blockbuster On Demand will remain intact.

DISH said Blockbuster franchises and licensed stores in the United States and internationally will stay open.
