MCV has a neat feature on the creation of the first Call of Duty by the then-newly-formed Infinity Ward, and it’s got plenty of awesome tidbits of info, including that amazing working title in the headline of this post.
It’s hard to imagine now, but Medal of Honor was once the King of Shooters, and the team responsible for the best one, Allied Assault (pictured), ended up forming Infinity Ward after EA decided not to have the Allied Assault studio, which was independent, work on any more Medal of Honors. Activision bought them and committed to a year of funding of their first project, and the rest is history.
But this quote from lead artist Justin Thomas on the team’s arrogance in building the project sticks out: ““I wouldn’t make the mistake of calling it the most humble team.
“The project was actually named ‘MOH killer’ until an official name could be found. We were focused more on fun than success, with the idea that if it was fun, it would be successful. We were just going to make a great game, and do the things better than we did on previous projects.”
A decade later, EA is trying to reclaim the throne from IW’s creation, which has been more successful than Medal of Honor ever was. So that arrogance was apparently warranted.
