Xbox One Dashboard screenshots show apps, earning Achievements for watching TV

Microsoft has released a slew of Xbox One Dashboard screenshots, which compliment the 12-minute video it released earlier. Some of the shots are rather old, but others show interesting developments: like earning an Achievement for watching television through your console.

A patent filed by Microsoft which surfaced in May touted the possibility of this, allowing users watching TV to feel as if they are participating in something instead of just being a “passive viewer.”

“Television viewing tends to be a passive experience for a viewer, without many opportunities for the viewer to engage or have interactive experiences with the presented content,” the application stated. “To increase interactive viewing and encourage a user to watch one or more particular items of video content, awards and achievements may be tied to those items of video content.”

More Achievements could be handed out by using Kinect along with the system, and handing them out when users perform certain actions while they watch a show.

Earlier today, Microsoft published a list of Xbox One applications which will be made available at launch or during the launch window. Some of these apps are also shown in the screenshots below. You can review the list through here.

Xbox One releases on November 22.
