UK: Xbox 360 and Nintendo 3DS top hardware sales in 2013

By Sherif Saed

2013 is over and the numbers are in, Microsoft’s Xbox 360 is the best selling home console in the UK, whereas the Nintendo 3DS family is the best selling handheld.

Sales data reported by Chart-Track and posted by Eurogamer, show the Xbox 360 selling more than any other home console this year, despite suffering a 30.7% plummet.

Nintendo’s handhelds are the real winner here, with the 3DS -including 3DS XL and 2DS- topping the chart, up 4% from last year. Individually, the 3DS sales were down 69.9%, though a healthy surge of 51% from the 3DS XL sales and the launch of the 2DS, managed to compensate for that.

Surprisingly the Wii U was the only home console that showed growth, with a 41.5% increase in sales. Though as Eurogamer noted, it’s due to the console launching only at the end of 2012. The console is however outperformed by every other home or handheld.

2013 totalled a 5% increase in hardware for all platforms over 2012, with a 38% increase in revenue.

We reported on part of this news last week but that was before the figures were made public. Now you know the rest of the story, what do you think?
