Nintendo’s 3DS has passed a significant sales milestone in Japan, and this week’s Media Create sales charts show a fair bit of movement in the frequently static market.
It’s been quite a while since the charts appeared during my shift rather than the US one, so it’s interesting to see how much has changed in the intervening months; the charts are almost entirely populated with new or recent releases, with the 3DS managing nine of the top twenty games. That’s a very different market from the one that threw up the same months- or years-old Wii games week after week, with the PS3 lazily surfacing to produce a hit now and then. The 3DS having so much impact over the last 12 months suggests the Japanese market at present reacts favourably to new hardware, so it’ll be great to tune in in the months after next-gen launches.

As for hardware, the 3DS passed the 15 million life-to-date, but otherwise there’s little to report. Sales remained largely static, as you’ll note when you glance over last week’s sales in parentheses – but they’re not going down in any significant fashion, which is the important thing.
