Castle Doctrine competition winner earns $316 through digital burglary

Jason Rohrer, developer of the online “we must protect this house” simulator Castle Doctrine, celebrated the game’s launch last week with a contest: players who stole and managed to hold on to at least $1054 worth of stuff would get real prize money, from $1 for that minimum on up. The biggest earner garnered $316 in real cash for holding a house worth $334k.

There were other prizes as well; the top earners who had a painting in their houses would get IRL versions of those paintings, along with some other odd items. The aforementioned person at the top of the leaderboard also goes home with a dog club, and a couple of the others getting a shopping spree at the Custom Cartridge gun store in New Mexico.

As you may expect from this story, Jason Rohrer has some opinions. In January he talked about the evils of digital PC game sales.
