Papers, Please creator Lucas Pope has said he wants to see the game come to PlayStation Vita, but is in two minds over who should make the handheld version of the game.
Pope told VG247 he wants to see the game come to the Sony handheld, but said he was unsure as to whether he wants to handle development himself or hand it off to an outside developer, noting he’s been the only person to have touched its source code and assets, despite offers from elsewhere to help on its recent update that seen it localised in multiple languages.
“Up until now, I’ve been the only guy who’s ever touched the source code or anything related to the game. And that’s just kind of a control issue,” Pope said this past weekend in an interview as part of a broad feature on Papers, Please you’ll see on the site soon.
“A lot of people offered to just, ‘send me over the assets and codes and I’ll kick out all your localised versions, you’ll be set’, but I wanted to do it myself because it was a little bit fun and because I’m a control freak.
“For a Vita version, I’m 50 percent I want to do it myself and 50 percent I should just hand it off to somebody who knows what they’re doing and can take it over for me.”
Pope admitted if the game did come to Vita, it would face challenges on the UI to help better suit it, “I do want to do a Vita version, but the thing is there’s a lot of kind of interesting UI challenges to make it work well on Vita: much smaller screen, much smaller hit targets. So that kind of stuff interests me to try to figure out how to make it work well on Vita.
“So that’s the part of me that wants to be really involved in the port, but the other part is like, ‘I got to do something else, I got to move onto something else’ so I haven’t really decided what to do there.”
For now; Pope intends to take a break from Papers, Please besides support issues on PC, though intends to make a ‘quick, short free game’ before eventually coming back to develop an iPad version of the game.
Look for the full feature on the site soon.
