Classic text adventure The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy will be made available to play online as part of the property’s 30th anniversary celebrations.
PlayerAttack reports the 1984 release will be made playable on the BBC Radio 4 website from March 8, when the BBC’s anniversary celebrations begin. Follow its official Twitter for more precise launch details.
The new version will have updated HD graphics, and will allow users to share their achievements via social networks.
Although it’s not impossible to get hold of a playable version of the game, it’s not commercially available or easily accessible to many consumers, so for many fans this may be the first time they’ve ever experienced the text adventure.
Developed by Infocom, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy was designed and written by original creator Douglas Adam and colleague Steve Meretzky. Fans of the sprawling franchise will find it very familiar – not that it’s likely to help, as Adams’ sense of humour shines through strongly in the game’s design, leading to many and varied ways to die or otherwise end the game prematurely.
If you’ve never heard of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy – well, I’m not really sure what to say, except that we were never really friends and I won’t miss you.
