Dragon Fin Soup is an RPG with a roguelike garnish

By Mike Irving

Small indie team Grimm Bros have unveiled their debut title, Dragon Fin Soup, a carefully crafted RPG with procedurally-generated roguelike elements.

As Red Robin, a cheerfully alcoholic version of the Red Riding Hood character, you explore the twisted fairy tale world of Asura, which is located on the back of a giant space-time turtle. There are two gameplay modes: Story Mode plays like a classic console RPG, with a focus on story and character progression. Survival is more of a roguelike, where you fend off monsters in procedurally-generated environments, always facing the threat of character permadeath.

It also sounds like Red Robin’s tale is just the beginning, with other twisted versions of classic characters playable at a later stage.

Throw in day and night cycles, unpredictable weather patterns, scripted story missions, random side quests, and fishing, gathering and crafting systems, and Dragon Fin Soup is looking promising.

It’s scheduled to release on PC, PS3, PS4 and Vita later this year. The Kickstarter campaign is running now, and has already met its funding goal, with three weeks remaining.
