External storage confirmed for Xbox One June Update

By Stephany Nunneley

External Storage, which was all but confirmed earlier this week, and Real Names are coming with the Xbox One System Update in June.

UPDATE: Below is a video walk-through of the features we listed by Major Nelson.

Real names and external storage support are just the start: new SmartGlass features including OneGuide and Universal Remote Control, automatic account selection sign-in, and more.

Xbox One owners in Canada and Europe will also get access to OneGuide and more TV, SmartGlass and voice features.

Once the update is released, Xbox One will support up to two external hard drives. Users can plug-in a 256GB or larger USB 3.0 external hard drive and once formatted, copy and move games, apps and game add-ons to it.

You can then take your hard drive to a friend’s house and and play the stored game directly from an external drive. You’ll need to sign in to Xbox Live if you’ve purchased your content digitally or insert a disc to verify your game ownership.

With Real Names, it makes it easier to find your friends amid the 1,000 XBL friends you may have. Users will also be able to share with friends, a subset of your choosing, friends of friends or none. Your name doesn’t show up in games, and you can change your settings any time from your profile and when adding new friends.

OneGuide and Universal Remote Control are coming to SmartGlass so users can view all TV listings and set favorite channels and app channels on your smart phone, tablet or PC. This will also allow you to switch channels, set new recordings and control recorded content from your DVR.

Pin reordering also allows for more organized pins in categories or favorite.

Other improvements to SmartGlass include hero stats and activity feed which makes it easier to compare achievements.

Expanded TV and OneGuide, as mentioned above, will also be made available in more Xbox One markets such as Canada, UK, France, Germany, Spain and Italy.

Also, as previously announced, new Gold Membership benefits and access to apps for non-Gold members will arrive on June 1.
