Lucas Pope, creator of the multi-award winning Papers, Please, is working on his next game, Return of the Obra Dinn. He hopes to capture the art of classic 1-bit black and white games released on the Mac Plus.
Pope has outlined his goals for Return of the Obra Dinn on The Independent Gaming Forums. The game will be a first-person mystery affair rendered in 1-bit using Unity 3D. It will not follow the “collect items and look for clues” structure, according to Pope, though he’s not yet talking about the mechanics.
The game plot follows Obra Dinn, a merchant ship that set out from London for the Orient with over 200 tons of trade goods in 1802.
“Six months later it hadn’t met its rendezvous point at the Cape of Good Hope and was declared lost at sea. Early this morning of October 14th, 1808, the Obra Dinn drifted into port with sails damaged and no visible crew. As insurance adjustor for the East India Company’s London Office, find means to board the ship and recover the captain’s logbook for assessment, ” Pope wrote.
There’s no release window as of yet, but Pope promised to keep us updated with devlogs as he makes progress through its development.
