According to literature posted by the National Resources Deference Council (NRDC), Nintendo’s Wii U is more efficient than PlayStation 4 or Xbox One which showed double the energy consumption compared to PS3 and Xbox 360, respectively.

The console which used the most energy while in use was Xbox One, but Microsoft’s consoles used the most energy when in standby mode.

The report also states that in standby mode, 40% of electricity ($400 million worth) is wasted by PS4, Wii U and Xbox One. This means, that if a customers were to replace 110 million last-gen consoles with the newer ones on the market, total energy use would be enough to power the fourth-largest city in the US: Houston, Texas.

This would cost households $1 billion annually.

In the report, which you can read in PDF format here, provided suggestions on how each of these companies could reduce consumers’ electic bills while also saving energy expended by power plants which use everything from coal to solar panels.
