You’ll know what caused the Vanishing of Ethan Carter this summer

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, the horror fiction title from former People Can Fly developers The Astronauts, will be released in roughly four months, according to creator Adrian Chmielarz.

Speaking with Eurogamer, Chmielarz said the release date was “probably the worst possible” for a game.

“We are going to have probably the worst possible release date, which is the middle of summer,” he told EG during the Digital Dragons conference in Poland.

“It’s hot and it’s summer – do you really want to play a game about autumn?”

At present the game is set for a release on PC, but PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions are being seriously considered. To bring the game to consoles though, the team first needs to get its hands on development kits.

“When we’re done with Ethan, trust us, we’ll bug [them] for one,” he said. “Right now they give you one or two because they want you to make a game on their platform, and that’s just great. The only thing that needs to happen is Microsoft has to drop the whole [parity clause which cites indies] need to be first on their console.

“Initially Sony was just fucking amazing. I know it’s their business – they smile because they want to make business – [but] I don’t give a fuck! I’m just happy that they’re smiling. They were talking to us and they were very responsive and we got the kits and it’s like – it’s unbelievable.

“Microsoft was a little bit quiet, but it’s changed lately. Microsoft got this big wake-up call I think. We are on good terms with both sides.”

Despite the fact dev kits haven’t landed in the studio, Chmielarz feels it would be “idiotic” if PS4 or Xbox One releases for The Vanishing of Ethan Carter weren’t considered.

“It would be idiotic not to, to be honest,” he said. “Maybe that’s too strong of a word but you know what I mean, right? If the game resonates with people, that’s easily going to be the first thing we do.”

The Banishing of Ethan Carter was announced in February 2013.
