Forza Horizon 2 developer Playground Games has confirmed that both the Xbox One and 360 versions of the racer are “different games” running on different engines. Studio creative director Ralph Fulton has explained what that means in a new interview.
The racer’s out September 20 on both formats, and Fulton recently confirmed that Forza Horizon 2 will not have paid boosters, like its predecessor Forza Motorsport 5.
Speaking with DigitalSpy, Fulton confirmed that Forza Horizon 2 will run in the Forza 5 engine on Xbox One, while the 360 edition – developed by Sumo Digital – will run on the previous Forza Horizon’s tech.
Explaining both versions, Fulton told the site, “It’s based in the same world, it’s based on the same themes. Rather than thinking of them as the same game on different platforms, they are different games inspired by the same ideas.”
“There are things we are doing in Forza Horizon 2 on Xbox One that honestly couldn’t be done on any other console,” he added.
One marquee feature discussed in detail during E3 2014 is the racer’s dynamic weather mechanic, and the return of Forza 5’s Drivatar feature. It’s unclear if both components will make it into the last-gen edition.
