Microtransactions being added to AAA games are unfortunately no longer news, though every once in a while we get to hear the developers of a game explain the reasoning behind adding them in the first place.
Pro Evolution Soccer 2015 details were announced last week, and with it came the announcement that the game would contain microtransactions. In myClub mode, the game allows you to spend either in-game currency, dubbed Game Points, or real money, to recruit players to your team.
Now, studio head James Cox spoke to IGN about the team’s decision to include them. “If you don’t have a lot of time, then with microtransactions you can go buy a lot of players that you want,” he said. “But you also can earn Game Points in the mode and other parts of PES as well. We’re trying to link things together so you can progress and build your team [normally]. The idea is that we’re trying to just give the players the choice of what they want to do. Some people have more time, some people have more money. Some people have a bit of each! Either way, you’ll have the choice.
“The general principle is that you will be able to buy the players you want, he exact final mechanic is all still being tuned, but yes–if you want to buy Ronaldo, one way or another, you will be able to do that. And you will be happy with what you spend your money on.”
The point he makes is about players not having enough time to spend on the game, and would rather choose to speed up the process by spending real-world money on the game, but what’s the rush?
Thanks, Gamespot.
