Amazon reveals how gamescom affected pre-orders, CoD: Advanced Warfare up 385%

By Dave Owen

Amazon has revealed how video game pre-order figures changed during the gamescom conference last week, revealing that Nintendo Wii U games rose the most, and while initially, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare was nowhere to be seen, it’s come to light the game did better than initially reported.

Amazon gamescom preorders

Amazon has sent the corrected version of the list over to MCV after it left Call of Duty out of the list in error.

According to Amazon’s figures, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare pre-orders rose 385% last week during gamescom.

Activision admitted recently that they have seen pre-order numbers for the series drop, and countered with the Day Zero edition preo-order incentive. This provides pre-order customers with the ability to play the game a day before release. The incentive seems to have worked.

Glad that’s cleared up then.

The original chart and the math included is below, minus the CoD Advanced Warfare section.

ORIGINAL

Nintendo Wii U games saw a 8.67% increase in pre-orders, followed by PS4 games at a 5.16% increase, and 2.81% for Xbox One.

Amazon also listed which individual games saw the biggest increases, as seen above. Here they are again:

1. Project CARS – 42.3 per cent increase
2. Rise of the Tomb Raider – 30.25 per cent increase
3. Bloodborne – 16.08 per cent increase
4. Hyrule Warriors – 11.77 per cent increase
5. Quantum Break – 10.77 per cent increase
6. Far Cry 4 – 9.53 per cent increase
7. Assassin’s Creed Unity – 9.44 per cent increase
8. Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor – 9.03 per cent increase
9. Battlefield: Hardline – 8.81 per cent increase
10. Super Smash Bros for 3DS – 7.56 per cent increase

Not all of it is a surprise, the controversy over Microsoft’s Tomb Raider exclusivity announcement clearly driving interest in the game. The likes of Far Cry 4 and Quantum Break are what you’d expect to see riding high.

But it is a surprise to see Nintendo do so well given that they didn’t even hold a press conference at gamescom. However, Hyrule Warriors was released in Japan last week accompanied with a series of promotional videos, and it has been driving Wii U sales over there.

Another pleasant surprise is Project Cars, which faces tough competition in the pile up of driving games being released this holiday period which includes Driveclub, Forza Horizon 2, The Crew, and F1 2014.

These numbers need to be put into context. The percentages are based on by how much pre-orders increased compared to pre-gamescom levels. So it’s possible that Advanced Warfare has already had a high number of pre-orders and simply maintained the same level last week, whereas Wii U games were at a relatively low level and even a small increase in pre-orders represents a significant percentage increase. It’s difficult to know how valuable this information is without anything to compare it to.

Thanks, MCV.
