Silent Hills hasn’t even been formally announced yet – sneaky, Konami – but thanks to its terrific demo P.T., fans are already working out the details.
Silent Hills was revealed in a very clever way – inside a supposedly unrelated product. During Sony’s gamescom 2014 conference, a new horror game called P.T. was announced, and an interactive teaser released to the PlayStation Store immediately.
We’re now pretty sure “P.T.” stands for “playable teaser” and not much else, because hours later fans unlocked the deceptively deep demo’s many secrets and discovered Silent Hills is being made by Hideo Kojima and Guillermo del Toro, starring Norman Reedus of The Walking Dead fame.
The demo is pretty good – very different, not very game-like, but super, super scary. Just the way Kojima likes it.
Despite initial skepticism, some Silent Hill fans have embraced the new project wholeheartedly. The video below, from DreamcastGuy, is just one example of how the fanbase has seized on potential clues and foreshadowing and run with it, within the broader context of the franchise’s lore.
I’ve spent a while working up to the video itself because it contains spoilers for P.T., and I really think you should give it a go yourself – so I didn’t want you just charging in and hitting play.
We have no real idea when we might hear more about this game, and when Pat asked Sony, we couldn’t get any details about whether Silent Hills is exclusive to PS4. I would imagine not, though, or Sony would probably just gleefully say so.
Thanks, Kotaku.
