Sony to start selling PS4 in China this December – report

Sony is not looking to leave Microsoft’s Xbox One competition-free in China. The firm is aiming for a December launch for PlayStation 4 in the region, according to a recent report.

Bloomberg is reporting that Sony will start packaging PlayStation 4 consoles intended to be sold in China.

Document filing on the website of the China Pilot Free Trade Zone – which was later confirmed by a Tokyo-based Sony spokesperson – mention that Sony is looking to package and sell 200,000 consoles annually in the region.

Sony has made it clear before that it intends to sell PlayStation 4 in China, but did not outline any specific launch plans.

MCVUK adds that Sony already has established business ventures with Chinese firms for both hardware and software, in China’s free trade zone.

Speaking with Game Informer regarding the report, a Sony spokesperson told the site that while the documents have indeed been filed, some parts of the document contain only “tentative” plans.

Said tentative plans include which console to actually release.

“Though it is true the filling was made and approved, some parts of the document such as the amount of shipment, number of staff, production start timing, were only tentative and do not represent the actual business plan,” said the representative.

“We have yet to announce which system will be available in China, price for the system and the launch date.”
