Oculus to Sony: don’t release Morpheus if it’s not as good as Rift

By Brenna Hillier

Oculus CEO Brendan Iribe has said the firm welcomes competition in the VR space, but not if it’s not good enough to rival the Rift.

Oculus has asked Sony, its most viable competitor, to come see the latest version of the Rift headset.

Speaking at the Web Summit Conference, as reported by The Guardian, Iribe said he offered a piece of advice to Sony: “Please make sure your product is as good or close!”

“We’re really looking forward to this as an industry that takes off. A number of companies will come in, even companies we haven’t heard of yet two or three or five years down the road,” he said.

“At the same time we’re a little worried about some of the bigger companies putting out product that isn’t quite ready. That elephant in the room is disorientation and motion sickness.

“We’re encouraging other companies, particularly the big consumer companies, to not put out a product until they’ve solved that problem.”

Iribe’s comments don’t seemed to have been framed as a dig at Sony or other competitors’ tech. If VR is going to happen, it’s got to have lots of consumer and developer support – and that won’t happen if crappy tech floods the market, convincing people it’s not a viable option.

The full report is well worth a look for Iribe’s discussion of the future of VR.

Thanks, CVG.
