The Unfinished Swan developers Giant Sparrow revealed the first look at its latest game in the works, What Remains of Edith Fitch.
Announced back in March 2013 as code name Edith Finch, the game is a collection of short stories about a cursed family in Washington State.
Each story gives the player a chance to play as a different member of the family over the course of a century.
The tone of the stories and each family member differ to the next with the only constant being that family member’s death. It will be played via a first-person perspective, so you will get to experience each death.
In the game Edith Finch will explore the history of her family through these stories, hoping to find out why she’s the last Finch left alive.
Giant Sparrow said that while it sounds like a horror game, it isn’t – at least in the sense that it wasn’t designed to “scare people.”
“Instead, we wanted to make something that feels like looking up at the night sky and being simultaneously amazed by the majesty of the universe and humbled by how fragile and short your own life is,” wrote creative director Ian Dallas on the PS Blog.
“Like The Unfinished Swan, it echoes what it feels like to be a child: encountering forces beyond your ability to understand or control. That can definitely feel scary, but it isn’t meant to. More than anything this game was inspired by growing up in Washington State and being surrounded by forests, mountains and oceans where nature often feels both beautiful and unsettling.”
What Remains of Edith Finch is being published by Sony Santa Monica and it will be available sometime in 2016 exclusively for PS4.
