By Stephany Nunneley

Nintendo has temporarily ceased distribution of its games and consoles in Brazil due to high tariffs.

The firm told Brazilian site UOL Games it will continue to explore ways in which fans in the country can acquire its products in the future.

“Brazil is an important market for Nintendo and home to many passionate fans but unfortunately challenges in the business local environment have made our current distribution model in the country unsustainable,” said Bill van Zyll, director and GM for NoA’s Latin American division.

“These challenges include high tariffs on imports that apply to our industry and our decision not to have a local manufacturing operation. Working together with the Juegos de Video Latinoamérica, we will monitor the evolution of the business environment and evaluate the best way to serve our Brazilian fans in the future. ”

Juegos de Video Latinoamérica CEO Bernard Josephs added that while it remains the distributor of Nintendo products for Latin America it too will be reevaluating its approach to distribution in Brazil.

“We will continue to monitor the environment in the country so that we can evaluate future opportunities,” he said.

The changes in Brazil will not affect other markets in the area, Josephs said.

UOL Games noted that for over one year now, its has been “impossible for many people to buy content from the online eShop” for Nintendo 3DS and the Wii U eShop is absent.

The site attributed the lack of an online store to Nintendo’s failure to “adapt themselves to the banking regulations” which do not allow certain bank credit cards to be used via online stores.
