Disney Infinity was the best selling toys-to-life game in 2014, according to Disney. According to Activision however, Skylanders was the real winner of 2014.

Activision announced last week that Skylanders lead the toys-to-life genre for a third consecutive year. The publishers says the game outsold the nearest competitor (Disney Infinity) by 17%, based on NPD, GfK and internal estimates.

“Skylanders continues its leadership position as the #1 kids video game franchise globally as well as in the U.S. by wide margins,” Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg said. “As a global franchise in 2014, Skylanders is 30% bigger than its nearest competitor. And Skylanders Trap Team outsold its nearest competitor globally by 17%.

“As the creators of the ‘Toys to Life’ category, we are thrilled to continue to lead it for the third consecutive year.”

However, Disney is claiming – also based on NPD data – that Disney Infinity outsold its nearest competitor (Skylanders) in total starter pack sales and total sales revenue.

Disney also says that franchise sales increased 16% compared to the same period last year and that Infinity’s market share increased from 43% to 47%.
