Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi to receive GDC Lifetime Achievement Award

Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of Final Fantasy and head of Mistwalker, will be the recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award during the 15th annual Game Developers Choice Awards.

Sakaguchi served as director of planning and development at Square Enix and created Final Fantasy, the title of which came about due to his plan to retire from game development should the game prove unsuccessful.

While at Square, he also produced Kingdom Hearts, Vagrant Story, Parasite Eve, and others before leaving the firm to form Mistwalker in 2004.

Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, The Last Story and Terra Battle have since come out of Mistwalker.

Double Fine’s Tim Schafer will host the GDC Awards which take place Wednesday, March 4 during GDC 2015 in San Francisco.
