Layoffs hit EverQuest and H1Z1 studios one week after SOE buyout

Daybreak Game Company, the studio formerly known as Sony Online Entertainment and developer of the EverQuest franchise and H1Z1, has suffered a round of layoffs which includes David Georgeson, SOE’s director of development.

Georgeson confirmed his departure on Twitter.

A source close to the studio told Kotaku that when Sony sold SOE to investment firm Columbus Nova, staff were informed soon after that in order to become “profitable,” staff positions would be cut.

Daybreak wouldn’t provide a number on the redundancies, but stated it had eliminated positions within the San Diego and Austin studios.

“As part of a strategic decision to rationalize the business, Daybreak Game Company announced today that it will eliminate positions in both its San Diego and Austin studios,” read the statement. “This alignment of resources better positions the newly independent studio for future growth opportunities and developments, including delivering on its legacy of making top online games and establishing a solid foundation for future multi-platform success.

“These reductions will not affect the operation of current games and the company will continue on its mission to partner with its player community to drive the future and push the boundaries of online gaming.”
