PlanetSide 2’s creative director, Matt Higby, has resigned from the newly formed Daybreak Game Company.
He announced he was leaving the firm on the PlanetSide 2 sub-reddit.
“Working on PlanetSide 2 has been the absolute highlight of my career, but after four years working on the game, it’s time for a change,” he wrote. “This is a move I’ve been considering for a while now, and the reorganization provided the right opportunity for me to exit.
“PlanetSide 2 is in great hands, with terrific people who honestly care about the game and the players. I can’t stress this enough, the folks working on every aspect of the game, developers, marketing, community are talented, hard working people who care more than you can imagine – I’m fully confident they’re going to do an amazing job on the next leg of the journey.”
One of the MMO’s producers, David Carey, also left earlier this week, stating on the sub-reddit that the investment firm which purchased Sony Online Entertainment, Columbus Nova, “deserves no hate in all this.”
“They are more like white knights than negative forces here,” he wrote. “If you guys feel angry or betrayed, it would be misdirected to place that at the feet of the new company.
“They didn’t bring in new staff to replace us, or say we did a shitty job and treat us poorly – they looked at the bottom line and the numbers just didn’t line up.”
A number of staff members were laid off at Daybreak this week, with EverQuest franchise boss David Georgeson and lead content designer Steve Danuser both let-go along with staffers at both the San Diego and Austin studios.
