The Order: 1886 dev “trying to do something different” with cinematics

The Order: 1886 blends cinematic and gameplay more closely and continuously than most games.

In The Order: 1886, Ready At Dawn intends for you not to be able to tell the difference between gameplay and cinematic at first glance. There are a lot of cinematics, and many of them are interactive.

Speaking to Gametrailers, as transcribed by Gamespot, creative director Ru Weerasuriya acknowledged that this approach has raised concerns.

“We took the risk of trying to do something that was different, but the reality of it is that it is part of the game, and one of the big things we want to tackle with this game,” he said.

“That kind of seamless-ness, that constant question that you have of whether or not what you’re looking at is a cinematic or are you playing the game.”

Whether this will go down well with gamers and critics remains to be seen; Weerasuriya said release will be a “trial by fire” for the formula – but worth it to do something new.

“We put it out there and see what people say, but for us it was important that as the next-generation was here to do something different not to just give people what they expected; not to just say, ‘Hey, here’s every game you’ve seen until now and we’re just giving you a re-hash. We wanted something new.”

The Order: 1886 is a PS4 exclusive due on February 20. Hit the link above for more details on the cinematics and your involvement with them.
