Candlelight Studios, which is comprised of Joshua Temblett, has announced the development of Untold Story.
The game is an 8-bit, turn-based RPG reminiscent of games released during the Nintendo Entertainment System era.
In it, players take on the roll of the knight Adrasteia while an invasion his city occurs.
“The story of Untold Story, and the way it’s told, is quite different from that of NES RPGs,” Temblett said in a development blog. “Unlike NES RPGs, Untold Story focuses on heavy characterization and telling an engaging story with those characters, rather than presenting a broad picture of the world and its characters.”
Untold Story, according to Temblett, contains modern “character-based story-telling and a unique battle system,” in which characters and enemies act independently of each other, similar to SNES Final Fantasy titles.
Each unit has its own speed stat which will determine whether an action can or cannot be taken.
“Unlike NES (and well pretty much any other) RPG, players have a rather limited selection of moves,” he continued. “This small selection of actions requires the player to use what moves they do have wisely, striking enemies at the right time.
“Enemies also hit hard and fast so the player will need to keep on their toes and make sure they don’t miss time their character’s actions. If you miss a heal or hit the wrong enemy with a certain attack, it could be the difference between life and death.”
Currently in development, the game is set to release sometime during the first half of this year.
More information on the game can be found on the game’s website, which Temblett updates every Thursday.
Platforms were not revealed, but we’re assuming the game is coming to PC as Temblett’s other game, Tiny’s Grand Adventure, is currently on Steam Greenlight.
