The best FREE iOS games this week

Does Not Commute (iPad, iPhone)

Drive a car from one point to another while simultaneously guiding other vehicles out of its way. Crash and you go slower. Get beaten by the timer and you lose. This gets real hectic real quick, and edges towards 100% fun. Totally download it.

Hellrider (iPad, iPhone)

Most people have, at some point or another, wanted to pilot a motorcycling duck through nefarious nether regions, making Hellrider a necessary addition to the App Store. Variations in screen orientation and control reversals keep play interesting, and clever use of ads (you need to watch them to unlock characters) make this a stand-out.

Spirit Lords (iPad, iPhone)

Hack, slash, run around an isometric world instantly recognisable to anyone familiar with the likes of Diablo and Torchlight. One of the Diablo 2 artists was a prime influence on Spirit Lords, so go figure. Neat action for nothing.

The best PAID iOS games this week

Sorcery! 3: €4.99 (iPad, iPhone)

Seven deadly serpents, time travel and a massive open world make Sorcery! 3, the third of inkle’s Steve Jackson game-book adaptions, an instant classic. A single-player pen-and-paper RPG on iPad is something you should own, especially given the general review froth generated over this. Get it.

Rex Rocket: Mobile: €1.99 (iPad)

The sci-fi, Metroid-style platforming in Rex Rocket will challenge most players, making it worth a look if you’re hankering for some “must finish this regardless of the consequences” gameplay. The controls are a little pony, but you can’t have everything. Great fun.

Arcane Tower: €1.99 (iPad, iPhone)

Arcane Tower is a decent mobile roguelike, throwing you into dungeons guarded by traditional “fantasy” baddies such as spiders and ghosts. You’ll get daily challenges and plenty of abilities for your money, but longevity may be an issue. Get it anyway. Why not?
