“Star Ocean” is currently leading the pack when it comes to possible answer to the riddle of Square Enix’s latest teases.
Square Enix opened a mysterious teaser website last week, showing a few letters and numbers and not much else.
In the interim, the site has been updated. You can now clearly read the word “star”, and see a 2015 date forming.
Gematsu noticed the update, and reports the next info drop is coming on April 14.
There are a lot of ways this could play out but the one that makes my heart beat against my ribs is a new Star Ocean.
There have been four Star Ocean games so far. The series kicked off in 1996 on the SNES, and two sequels followed in relatively rapid succession on the PSOne and PS2. The series then went silent till 2009, when we got the Xbox 360 exclusive The Last Hope, which wasn’t as beloved – not to mention falling victim to the fact that JRPG fans did not abandon the PlayStation despite Microsoft’s really admirable effort to boost its reputation for the genre by signing exclusivity deals.
It’s been a while since we got a big original release out of Star Ocean developer tri-Ace, a grievously under-appreciated team. It developed both Final Fantasy 13 sequels, but Resonance of Fate was the last time it was let loose on its own project for a home console.
The team has been suspiciously less prolific over the past few years, and I would not be at all surprised to learn it had something major in the works. You may remember Square Enix promising us some big home console RPG surprises this year, too.
Please cross your fingers for “not a smartphone game”, anyway.
