We’ve known for a while now the Need for Speed reboot will be require a constant internet connection. Today, developer Ghost Games gives us one of the reasons why.
Back around the time Need for Speed got revealed, developer Ghost Games said being always online was part of the game’s narrative, but couldn’t explain how.
Speaking in the latest issue of OXM (via GamesRadar) executive producer Marcus Nilsson said that the reboot builds on the Autolog system, which acts as an in-game social network that goes beyond connecting players.
“We also have a new snapshot system as well,” he adds. “Which is taking pictures of a lot of different moments – [they go] out to the Need for Speed network where people can ‘like’ them, and those likes are being pushed back into the game as currency.”
“So you get progression from sharing your photos.”
Your social media worth (albeit only in-game) will be assigned a value come November 3 when Need for Speed releases on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
