Patch 1.08 for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt did indeed improve the game’s performance on consoles, as well as fix frame-rate drops introduced with patch 1.07.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt players everywhere received patch 1.08 last week. The patch notes highlighted frame-rate and performance improvements on both consoles, which suffered somewhat with the release of 1.07.
Digital Foundry did a deep dive to find out exactly what the patch did and if it has truly improved performance. First off, the 20fps cap on the Crookback Bog area on Xbox One has been removed, making for a smoother experience.
Drops to 25fps in Novigrad’s marketplace on PS4 have been removed. Some long-standing issues however have not been fixed. Things like stutters in busy areas on PS4 and texture pop-in are still there.
The report notes that while most of these adjustments are welcome, they simply brought the performance to where it was with 1.05. Which means the Xbox One version still offers slightly better frame-rate, and the PlayStation 4 is the only version offering full 1080p resolution.
Another important trick you can use on PS4 is to disable blur and motion blur to improve some of the most intensive areas without much of an image quality loss.
