During Apple’s big event today, it showed off the new iPhone 6S and 6S Plus, Apple Watch and iPad models. We expected that; however, it also unveiled the revamped Apple TV which will also play games on your big screen. This was expected as well.
Apple TV features a third-party App Store and an overhauled operating system which “runs on tvOS” based on iOS. The device also allows the user to continue playing games from their mobile to the television.
Demos of games shown included various mobile titles such as Shadowmatic and the new mobile Guitar Hero Live game from Activision. Activision later told us it’s bringing Skylanders SuperChargers and Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions Evolved to the device, too.
Disney Infinity 3.0 and a new multiplayer version of Hipster Whale’s Crossy Road are also coming to the Apple TV, and Harmonix is releasing its new title Beat Sports exclusively for the device.
According to Engadget, which is live blogging the conference, Beat Sports “combines the joy of hitting balls with the joy of hitting notes.”
In the press release, Harmonix described the game as a collection of “music-infused mini-games” based loosely on familiar sports such as tennis, volleyball, and golf. Players will use the new Apple Remote to play the game.
The Apple TV remote contains a touch screen, and when you turn it to the side, you can use it to control the games using swipes and other gestures. In other words, it features motion control, but the play, rewind and other TV buttons can be used for games as well.
It also appears that the existing iOS-compatible controllers on the market will work with the device as well.
Apple TV ships in late October and there will be two models on offer: 32GB for $149 and 64GB for $199.
