Jason Voorhees isn’t dead. He’s just been sleeping in the bottom of Crystal Lake or something.
Launched on Kickstarter today, Gun Media’s Friday the 13th video game will allow players to “stalk” counselors at Camp Crystal Lake as Jason Voorhees, or play as one of the campers and attempt to survive the night.
As Jason walks menacingly towards you and still catches up with you – because no matter how fast you run, his walk is faster. Plus you always fall. Because you’re clumsy. And you always hide in stupid spots. Or have sex. You always die after you have sex. Or take a shower. Or go skinny dipping. Or just breathe.
Anyway, all overly-used jokes about horror movie tropes aside, Friday the 13th: The Game is a third-person, asymmetrical eight-player multiplayer title where one player controls Jason Voorhees while the remaining seven control camp counselors.
Set in the semi-open world of Camp Crystal Lake, there is “no shaky cam, no found footage” as the story itself is being revitalized to match the blood-splattered slashers of yore.
Announced as Summer Camp last fall, the game will feature none other than Jason in Friday the 13th films 7-10, Kane Hodder. Hodder is also a professional stuntman, stunt coordinator, actor and ghost hunter who has appeared in films for over 20 years.
Composer Harry Manfredini, who was responsible for original Friday the 13th score and soundtrack, as well as eight other films in the series is also involved.
And there’s also horror maestro Sean S. Cunningham who directed and produced the original film and created Voorhees and Tom Savini, a special makeup effects icon who worked on Friday the 13th 1 and 4. Savini will help with the “kills and brutality” in the game.
There’s a lot to take in with this game, so head through the Kickstarter page for more information.
With 31 days left on the clock, as of press time, 616 backers have pledged $41,613 toward the game’s $700,000 goal. It’s in development for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
