It’s its own thing, horror fans.
“As soon as you say ‘on-rails’ to an experienced PlayStation gamer, they say, ‘That sounds a little 80s or 90s to me.’ But the experience of a roller coaster ride allows us to provide pacing.”
Be confused no longer. Until Dawn: Rush of Blood is a full game for PlayStation VR, and will be released as a separate package.
“It’s a completely stand-alone product,” said Supermassive executive producer Simon Harris, speaking to VG247 at a behind-closed-doors preview event in Paris last week.
“It’s not DLC, or anything like that. It’s its own product for PlayStation VR; it’s just set in the world of Until Dawn.
“This game charts the descent into madness of one of the characters from the Until Dawn universe. As they play through, fans of the series will start to recognise very familiar locations, some things around the characters and other similar aspects.
“It’s very much set in that world and that universe, but it’s a completely separate game.”
Harris didn’t respond directly to a question about how much play you can expect to be included in Rush of Blood, instead saying: “You’re seeing a demo which is about seven minutes long. That’s about half of one of our levels, and there’ll be a good number of levels in the game.”
He added: “The whole thing is on-rails.”
Until Dawn: Rush of Blood was confirmed for PlayStation VR last week at Paris Games Week after its existence leaked a few days previously.
Ups and downs
The demo started with a ride in a roller coaster car and the shooting of pigs heads on stakes with two Move controllers. At one point, the game stopped and tricked me into looking round – only to confront me with a screaming ghoul. Harris said VR is going to be perfect for jump-scares.
“When you think about Until Dawn, you have to set them up in a certain way. Now we have to set you up in all sorts of new ways, by making you look left and right and things like that.”
Harris also said that he players shouldn’t be put off by the fact the entire thing’s on-rails.
“As soon as you say ‘on-rails’ to an experienced PlayStation gamer, they say, ‘That sounds a little 80s or 90s to me.’ But the experience of a roller coaster ride allows us to provide pacing. If you play the demo you’ll see that you have fast sections and slow sections as you go up hills.”
He added that slow parts, and even points at which the player is unable to move at all, also allowed players to become accustomed to the VR experience in general instead of suffering the motion sickness sometimes associated with twin-stick movement.
Until Dawn: Rush of Blood has no release date as yet. PlayStation VR is schedule to release in the first half of 2016. Until Dawn released this August for PS4.
