Half-Life 3 had various prototypes being worked on – one was an RTS, the other involved live actors

A new year, and another year of wondering what the hell is going on with Half-Life 3.

There is really nothing to new to report on the Half-Life 3 front, but an interesting snippet of information has come to light regarding what can surely be considered borderline vaporware at this point.

According to what Game Informer’s executive editor Andrew Reiner said in the latest Game Informer Show podcast, the various prototypes for Half-Life 3 range from an adventure game to real-time strategy (thanks, International Business Times).

Reiner said while he was investigating a story on the game, one developer provided some “legitimate information” on the various prototypes, noting in the process it was all a bit of a “hot mess.”

“There were so many different prototypes being worked on by small teams of four or five people. It just never got off the ground,” according to Reiner. “They said two of the directions they were going in: one was going to be an RTS game for Half Life 3 or Episode Three, whatever they were going to call it that changed the script.

“The other involved live actors. It was going to be a new kind of adventure action game with actual actors. Kind of like Night Trap, but far advanced. Apparently they were working on these things.”

He said that other people he reached out to “didn’t want to talk about it all,” which lead to “dead end after dead end.”

We can talk for ages about what is known and what isn’t known about Half-Life 3. But, we won’t. There doesn’t seem to be much point, but there is always reason to keep hope alive, we suppose.

If the game is indeed still in the works, hopefully, Valve will release it sometime before the rapture.
