Will Resident Evil 7 be remembered fondly for pushing the series forward, or are we looking at yet another mediocre horror game?
Resident Evil 7 is more than the next chapter in the venerable horror series. The game was announced late into its development, and Capcom surprised everyone with a January release date.
A lot is riding on Resident Evil 7, for a number of reasons. For starters, it’s the first entry to go completely first-person, a change from the third-person-focused releases since Resident Evil 4. In fact, many are hoping Resident Evil 7, like 4, will be the template the series follows going forward.
This perspective made scenes like this one with the Baker Family feel all the more terrifying, at least where trailers are concerned. And although there’s still a shooter component in it, it’s not clear how much of the game it’ll end up being.
First-person horror is big business these days, and outside of the cancelled Silent Hills, this is the first big game from a major publisher to tackle the reemerging genre. Resident Evil 7 is also the first big-budget title to be playable from start to finish in VR. You’ll only be able to that on a PlayStation VR for now, though.
Alex has played it in full, and felt it is indeed a strong return to the series’ roots, avoiding the trap of being an Amnesia or Outlast clone.
Will it go down in history as another landmark or be forgotten a few weeks later? Let’s find out!
