More Overwatch animated shorts are on the way

Work on the second season of Overwatch animated shorts is “well underway.”

Some chosen Overwatch characters got their own animated shorts. These videos tell previously unexplored stories about the heroes’ origins, and help flesh out the game’s lore.

They always get the treatment you expect from Blizzard, but it takes a while to get one out the door. The last one we got introduced us to Sombra, and that was back in November. Even not counting new heroes like Orisa, many of the game’s main cast have yet to get their own animated shorts.

This will soon change, though, as game director Jeff Kaplan said that the studio is currently working on more of these for the second season. Kaplan confirmed this to Polygon, adding that there’s a plan to do more.

“The animated shorts are probably the thing that we have the most fun making,” he told the site. “We really love working with our animation group and digging out the stories not tied to any constraints of gameplay — we can tell any stories we want.”

Interestingly, Kaplan said that Bastion’s origin story, The Last Bastion, was the end of the first season. Meaning Sombra’s introduction belongs to the second season.

Unfortunately, Kaplan couldn’t drop any hints about when the next short will be releasing. Until then, there’s a big Overwatch Anniversary event starting soon that will hopefully keep you busy for a while.
