Overwatch Game of the Year Edition releasing in time for Anniversary event, per Xbox Store mining

By Stephany Nunneley

It’s obvious an anniversary event is planned for Overwatch, and thanks to some sleuthing by True Achievements, we now know to expect the event to go live around May 23 – and alongside a Overwatch Game of the Year Edition at that.

While poking around the Xbox Store, TrueAchievements found a listing for Overwatch Loot Boxes tied to the anniversary event (thanks, PCgamesN). The site also found a listing for an Overwatch Game of the Year Edition.

Let’s start with the GotY Edition first.

According to what the site found on the Xbox Store, the Overwatch Game of the Year Edition download will include the following:

  • The full game
  • 10 Bonus Loot Boxes with cosmetic goodies for your Overwatch heroes.
  • Origin Skins for 5 Overwatch heroes.
  • A Baby Winston Pet for adventures in World of Warcraft.
  • The Tracer Hero for battling it out in Heroes of the Storm.
  • And more

The Game of the Year Edition for Overwatch is listed for release on May 23, which is the day before it’s May 24 anniversary.

More information on the Overwatch Anniversary event is below, but if you’d rather watch the video breakdown by Arekzz above instead of reading a wall of text, that’s an option. And we wouldn’t blame you.

While a release date didn’t seem to be listed for the Anniversary event, considering Blizzard tends to update Overwatch on Tuesdays, it’s expected to start on May 23 – the same day the GotY Edition is listed for release. The Xbox Store listing has the event ending on June 3, which is a Monday and a two week run which is pretty much standard for Overwatch happenings.

Below is what True Achievements found on the Xbox Store. We made it an image to break up the wall of text in this post.

Word of an anniversary celebration was first hinted at last week during Activision-Blizzard’s call to investors by Mike Morhaime. The following day, sound files, posted to reddit  referenced destruction, and the escorting, of an objective. Many characters in the sound files were said to have five unique lines for different circumstances.

With the Overwatch one year anniversary landing on May 24, the game boasting 30 million unique users and earning a place on Activision-Blizzard’s $1 billion seller list, it was pretty obvious a new event was in the planning stages to not only celebrate launch, but to thank the massive playerbase as well.

Game director Jeff Kaplan recently told Overwatch players “Symmetra fans will be very pleased soon,” as her camp has bemoaned the lack of Legendary skins for the character. Hopefully, her anniversary event skin will be super sharp.

Finally, just today, Blizzard announced it was taking down the Overwatch PTS 1.11,

All this leads to Blizzard announcing the Overwatch Anniversary event shortly. When it and the Game of the Year Edition are announced, we’ll let you know.
