Destiny 2 open beta guide: from loot to glitches, class advice and walkthroughs – we have it all

Joining the Destiny 2 open beta? We can help you out.

The Destiny 2 beta has been ticking along merrily this week, but the floodgates are opening later today to let everyone and their dog in for a crack at Bungie’s latest.

Whether you’re a returning player, a long-lapsed Guardian or brand new meat, the open beta has something to offer you – even if it’s only a chance to complain about the PvE balance, the connection errors, the glitches, and the Hunter’s class skill. Don’t worry, you’ll know all about that in a few hours, and can add your voice to the chorus.

At the end of the day, a beta’s a beta: it’s here to test the network infrastructure and secure pre-orders, not sell you on the finished game or even give you an accurate impression of how it will play. You’re not guaranteed to have a good time – or are you? That’s where we come in, with a stack of resources designed to help you make the most of the Destiny 2 open beta. Behold!

Guides

The opening mission of the Destiny 2 open beta does a fair job of introducing the basic concepts and gives you a good chance to poke around the menus and figure things out for yourself, so we’re not going to tell you the controls and advice you to, for example, push the left stick to walk. What we will do is line up a stack of information that might not be immediately apparent, so when you have questions, you can find what you want to know.

  • Which class is right for you?
So you’re staring at the open beta start screen like “who are these people and what are they doing on leg day, holy noodles, look at those quads”. Yeah, we feel you. Here’s a run down of class and subclass so you know what you’re getting into.
  • Tips for using every super effectively
Now that you’re in game and your super bar has finally – finally! – charged up, you press the shoulder buttons and – and what? Did you hit anything? Is that what’s supposed to happen? How do you make it go? Well, wonder no more.
  • Homecoming mission walkthrough
The open beta starts with a story mission – you can’t skip it and you can’t repeat it unless you roll a new character. Better get it over with – and get a sweet new Exotic weapon while you’re at it. Don’t let those damn turbines worry you any more.
  • How to blast through the Inverted Spire strike
If you’re more the PvE type, you’ll spend most of your time in this strike rather than the Crucible. It’s not as baffling as it seems at first; let us explain the mechanics and how to whip the boss good.
  • All Exotics, weapons and armour in the Destiny 2 beta
There’s no progression in the open beta but you can gather loot – which, frankly, has always been the point of Destiny. Take a look at what’s on offer for each of the three classes, maybe pick out which armour set and perks you’d like.
  • How and where to get the best loot
Now that you know what loot is available, you’ll want to know how to get it. These pro strats will fill your pockets in no time. Get hold of that armour that lets you move a bit quicker, that’s our pick.
  • Error codes – latest news, solutions and workarounds
It’s probable you will spend a not insignificant portion of your time with the Destiny 2 beta staring at one error screen or another. This is where we round up the latest updates on what’s going on with Weasel, Termite, Olive and more. Solutions where available, compassion where not.

Glitches

It’s an open beta test, so it’s not perfect. But perfection is a lot less fun than things you can ruthlessly exploit. Bungie will surely, surely patch these out for the final release, so have a go now so you can say you were there.

  • Voidwalker infinite grenade glitch
Why would you roll anything else when the Voidwalker is an unstoppable win machine thanks to an amazing glitch? This is the bane of the Crucible and has made everyone who isn’t a Voidwalker deeply miserable. End this, Bungie. End it now.
  • Infinite super in the Inverted Spire strike
Super your way to glory with the help of a flying motorbike. Oh, and by the way, if you fly those things backwards into a Vex portal… Just another little thing you might like to try before it is removed forever.
  • Infinite ammo in the Inverted Spire strike
Okay no we don’t condone cheating, but this isn’t cheating so much as an unfortunate balance issue with regards to damage over time and healing over time. Combine it with a tasty Exotic perk and you have a perfect solution to an ammo situation Bungie acknowledges is total crap.
  • Glitch into the Lost Sector on Nessus
Since you only get a couple of areas to explore, why not continue the fine traditions of Destiny betas by breaking the boundaries and going where you should not? It’s Rasputin’s bunker all over again.

If you’re looking for more Destiny 2 open beta coverage we absolutely have you covered. Is there anything we’re missing? Do you have questions we haven’t answered? Simply let us know. We live to serve.
