Life is Strange: Before the Storm video is everything we hate about viral marketing campaigns

By Shabana Arif

Try to keep your breakfast down while watching this Life is Strange: Before the Storm video.

Life is Strange’s three part prequel Before the Storm was announced in June and it focuses on the relationship between Chloe and Rachel – although Max makes a cameo if you pick up the Deluxe Edition of the game.

Ashly Birch won’t be lending her pipes to Chloe this time around, but Rhianna DeVries has done a good of calming our doubts about Birch’s absence.

We’ve already seen some spoiler-y gameplay – or not if you’ve been sensibly avoiding that kind of thing – as well as some bonding time between Chloe and Rachel in a second gameplay video.

And on that note, we can segue nicely into this hellscape about magic best friends from Square Enix. Enjoy.

Described as an “emotive” video with “real” people telling “genuine stories of friendship and love”, Open Letter was “created to reflect the strong themes of friendship, love and support in the game.”

“I wanted to capture the emotion and spirit of Life is Strange in a way that you don’t usually see in video game advertising. As a game, it braves to be different, harnessing emotions rarely seen in video games and I wanted the advertising to match this,” said Square Enix Vice President for Brand Marketing Jon Brooke.

“I am really pleased with how it turned out. It’s designed to remind us that life is all about our relationships and a strong friendship can change everything. I hope everyone can relate to that.”

Is the touching message of this video lost on my cold, black heart? Or is it the ultimate cringe fest that looks like it’d be more at home as a Dove advert?
