If you’re a Marvel movie fan and you’re on the fence about Infinite, here’s what you can expect story-wise.
The main reason to buy any fighting game isn’t story mode, obviously, but it proves to be a nice little bonus to a game that’s got a lot else to offer. Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite avoids the mode-drought problems that plagued Street Fighter 5 and has some pretty damn good core tag-based combat to boot as covered in the Marvel vs Capcom Infinite reviews – but it also includes a full-length cinematic story mode.
The story mode’s main cutscenes last about 90 minutes, as much as a lot of movies – and that’s not counting some of the unique dialogue you can hear during fights and gameplay. It’s a decent little story with some fun righting and some fun interactions between Marvel and Capcom’s finest, with my personal favourite stand-out being the return of Frank West’s original voice actor, who puts in a great performance as the slightly bumbling bad-ass Frank is meant to be.
If you want a glimpse at the story, here’s the main movie-style cutscenes gathered together into a YouTube video – an ideal way to get a glimpse at the production value and plot subject matter, if you’re so inclined:
This video covers all of the main story mode cutscenes, so watch at your own peril – it may be better to watch a little bit and get a feel for it and then drop out. With that said, even if you watch it all there’s a lot in the Infinite package to love – including some really slick-feeling netcode and really fun gameplay with great combo possibilities.
For all its issues and pre-launch criticism, Infinite definitely has it where it matters most – in fighting gameplay. It’s out now on PS4, Xbox One and PC.
