PC players who still use AMD Phenom 2 CPUs have not been having a great time with Destiny 2.
Despite the Destiny 2 PC beta not running into any particular problems with these older processors, it seems the launch version just can’t get pas the character screen on PCs running AMD Phenom 2 CPUs.
Multiple reports from players on Bungie’s forums, and Reddit (via PCGamesN) all talk about the same exact crash, with AMD Phenom 2 CPUs being a constant in all the reports.
Bungie never mentioned Phenom 2 CPUs by name in the game’s system requirements, but crucially, the developer warned that the game will not run on CPUs that do not support Supplemental Streaming SIMD Extensions 3 (SSSE3). As you may have guessed, Phenom 2 CPUs do not in fact support it.
For its part, Bungie said that it’s looking into the issue and will update players when more information becomes available. It’s unlikely this will change, so you should definitely hold off on buying Destiny 2 if your CPU doesn’t support the feature.
Destiny 2 PC servers went live yesterday to a relatively trouble-free start. That said, it’s always a good idea to keep the list of PC known issues on hand in case you run into any of them. For more gameplay tips, be sure to check out our Destiny 2 guide.
