Super Mario Odyssey amiibo guide: all outfit unlocks and using amiibo to find moons

By Alex Donaldson

That red and blue outfit is so outdated now – so switch it up with some amiibo unlocks.

The ability for Mario to change his outfit in Super Mario Odyssey feels a little weird and wrong at first. We’ve seen Mario in other outfits often, and he does capture enemies and possess them in this game… but those outfit changes are usually in spin-off games and without so much player choice. Is Mario really Mario without those dungarees? Well, yeah, I guess – and you’ve got the option now to dress him up in a variety of outfits.

Mario Odyssey features loads of different outfits, many of which are purchased using in-game currency from the shops in various kingdoms throughout the game world. If you’ve got amiibo, however, you’ll be able to access some extra costumes…

All of these costumes are available in-game naturally, but many of them are very late-game unlocks and will cost money. If you don’t want to get into Mario Odyssey’s coin farming look into amiibo – you can get your hands on a favorite fanservice look earlier.

How to use amiibo with Uncle Amiibo

Uncle Amiibo is an interesting little addition to the Super Mario lore – a little roomba-like device who zips around populated areas of each kingdom waiting for you to tap amiibo.

You’ll meet him after visiting the Cascade Kingdom, and from then on you’ll find him near the Odyssey in every single kingdom.

In order to use an amiibo, simply tap it to Uncle Amiibo and if it unlocks an outfit, he’ll handle the rest. You can only tap three at a time, and there’s a reason for that…

Using Uncle Amiibo to locate Power Moons

One extra bonus aside from the costumes is that by tapping amiibo to Uncle Amiibo he can help you track down Power Moons. You can scan up to three amiibo, and those three will then take five minutes to search for Power Moon locations.

Once the five minutes have passed, new Power Moons will be marked on the map to help you locate them more easily. Nice!

This works for all amiibo, not just the ones that unlock outfits, making for an ideal use for all those Zelda amiibo. Try tapping some non-Nintendo characters like Sonic or Shovel Knight, too – Uncle Amiibo has some cute choice words.

Mario Odyssey Amiibo Costume Unlocks

Special for Super Mario Odyssey’s launch are the new line of wedding amiibo, based off outfits seen in the cutscenes for the game and worn by non-player characters. Here’s what they unlock…

Wedding Mario Amiibo & Outfit

Hitting up Uncle Amiibo will get you the hat and clothes that make up the ‘Wedding Mario’ outfit – Mario’s Tuxedo and Mario’s Top Hat.

This outfit will be rewarded to you naturally via story progression, but by tapping the Odyssey-series Mario amiibo you can unlock it early.

Wedding Peach Amiibo & Outfit

The Wedding Peach amiibo is another part of the Odyssey set, and scanning it will get you access to the Bridal Gown and Bridal Veil. Mario will even swap out Cappy for what certainly looks like Tiara!

Wedding Bowser Amiibo & Outfit

Scanning the third and final of the Mario Odyssey series amiibo will get you a Wedding Bowser outfit which includes Bowser’s Tuxedo and Bowser’s Top Hat. This is similar to Mario’s Wedding outfit but with some cool Bowser touches, including a koopa shell on your back.

Classic Mario Outfit Unlock

The Classic Mario outfit features a more muted color scheme for our hero – rather than the bright primary red and blue we have now something more like the more naturally washed-out colors we saw on the NES. The Classic Suit and Classic Cap make up the ensemble.

You can get this amiibo by tapping the Mario or 8-Bit Mario (Super Mario Series) amiibo – either of the two 8-Bit color schemes work the same. Tapping Mario (Super Smash Bros Series) will also unlock this. Otherwise, it’ll be available to buy once you unlock the first post-game kingdom.

Luigi Outfit Unlock

If there’s one thing as classic as Classic Mario, it’s, well, Luigi. His outfit doesn’t quite look right on the shorter plumber and includes the Luigi Suit and Luigi Cap.

As you’d expect, tapping the Luigi (Super Mario Series) or Luigi (Super Smash Bros.) amiibo will unlock this outfit. It’ll also be available from the cap store in the nostalgia-packed first post-game Kingdom.

Dr. Mario Outfit Unlock

I’m not entirely sure Mario is actually a real doctor, but if he isn’t one wonders what he’s getting up to in this outfit and with those colorful pills… Susipicious. Anyway, this outfit includes the Doctor Outfit and Doctor Headgear, and looks like the outfit from the classic puzzler.

Tap the Dr. Mario (Super Smash Bros.) amiibo to unlock this outfit, or find it for sale in the first of the post-game kingdoms.

Gold / Metal Mario Outfit Unlock

Metal Mario is a classic power up in the series, and though it isn’t in this game you can live a little of it via an amiibo with the Gold Mario Suit and Gold Mario Cap.

Simply tap the Gold Mario amiibo or the Silver Mario amiibo from the Super Mario Bros amiibo series to unlock this one.

Wario Outfit Unlock

To unlock the Wario Suit and Wario Cap to have a complete classic 90s pre-Warioware Wario look, simply tap the Wario (Super Mario Series) or Wario (Super Smash Bros) amiibo.

Waluigi Outfit Unlock

Purple is a bad ass color, and Waluigi is a crotch-chopping scumbag, so what’s not to love? Tap the Waluigi (Super Mario Series) amiibo to unlock this.

Diddy Kong Outfit Unlock

if you ask us this one looks a little wrong, giving Mario Monkey arms and legs… but if you want to pay tribute to Rare, this is the outfit for you. Simply tap the Diddy Kong (Super Mario Series) or Diddy Kong (Super Smash Bros Series) amiibo to unlock this outfit.
