Destiny 2 supports text chat on PC, but it’s trying to avoid the MMO situation of constant spam.
The way Destiny 2 does this is by not having a public text channel to begin with. Instead, what you type in text chat is only seen by players in your fireteam.
Although it may seem like a very PC-specific problem, this design is actually in line with Bungie’s ‘opt-in’ approach to social play. “We said by default the only people you can talk to are your fireteam,” PC project lead David Shaw told PCGamesN.
“What that did was it fostered a stranger culture where it was really difficult to do something – griefing was hard, right? The worst thing I ever encountered was someone that followed me around the tower for like 20 minutes, and was just mildly annoying.”
Text chat is one of a few unique features in the PC version of Destiny 2. That said, the rest of the game’s content will be identical across all platforms. Meaning this massive Destiny 2 guide will be just as helpful to PC players as it was to their console friends in September.
The guide is your resource for anything and everything Destiny 2, whether that’s general tips like this one for how to level up fast, what class to roll in Destiny 2, or more involved walkthroughs like the big Leviathan raid guide – whatever your question is, you’ll find an answer in there.
The text chat feature in Destiny 2 also allows for whispers – the ability to DM specific players, and one that’s been available in all other Battle.net games. However, you’ll only be able to whisper players in your clan or on your friends list, in addition to the current firetime. This is yet another conscious limitation to stop situations like “walk[ing] into a public space and see[ing] just this flood of toxicity coming through,” according to Shaw.
Earlier today, we learned that Bungie plans to have complete parity between PC and console Destiny, it’s not afraid to treat each platform differently when it comes to balance and other platform-specific issues that arise.
If you’ve already pre-purchased Destiny 2 on PC, it’s worth taking a look at this article for system requirements, launch times, and few other very Destiny-specific problems like incompatibilities with certain programs.
Destiny 2 launches tomorrow on PC.
