Square-Enix wants to ‘aggressively’ pursue Switch development, says multiplaform games ‘not impossible’
A series of tweets from tech reporter Takashi Mochizuki have provided some interesting quotes from Square Enix’s second quarter earnings briefing.
Mochizuki posted several interesting facts – Nier Automata has sold 2 million copies (hence a new one being in development), and there are no plans to release more games before the end of the fiscal year (ending March), meaning that Project Octopath Traveler (which has a great demo available now) and the Switch version of Dragon Quest 11, neither of which have firm release dates, will likely release after this.
More interesting, though, are Square Enix’s comments on the Switch, which it says has a similar architecture to the PS4 and Xbox One.
SquareEnix:
-Switch's core architecture similar to PS4/Xbox One. Some adjustment necessary, but multi-platform games not impossible https://t.co/n3EyUYnFqZ— Takashi Mochizuki (@mochi_wsj) November 8, 2017
This is interesting, because we know that Square Enix has been looking into how to bring Final Fantasy 15 to Switch. Could we see the full version on the machine at some point?
SquareEnix:
-Switch's one ideal platform to put middle-range games, which got tough to achieve business success. SquareEnix's good at making these games, so would work on these aggressively https://t.co/kPQx0l8IIb— Takashi Mochizuki (@mochi_wsj) November 8, 2017
Square Enix also suggested that the Switch was the perfect console for ‘middle-range’ games, which it is ‘good at making’. It’s a little less clear what this statement means, exactly, but it looks like the company will be ‘aggressively’ pursuing Switch development.
SquareEnix:
-(When consider games for Switch), we won't rule out any IPs. Those include new ones, currently active ones, currently not-active ones.
-Probably other platforms will get these too as part of multi, but we would aggressively make games for Switch https://t.co/JFuZRZnVWH— Takashi Mochizuki (@mochi_wsj) November 8, 2017
Furthermore, the company is looking into the possibility of reviving old IP for the system. Chrono Trigger, please?
All of this suggests that we’ll see more games from Square Enix in the future.
